Hi, Friends! As we bid our adieus to 2022 and entered a new year, I was full of hope and excitement for what was to come in the fabulous realm of makeup. Turns out, I am a little surprised at what is making a comeback and what is sticking around! Let's see if any of these bring back a memory for you,or excite you enough to run to the nearest beauty store, and grab the latest trend!
The "Statement" Lip
Back in my day we called it a bold lip, but apparently that adjective is so last year- er- decades old. This year, the beauty industry has rebranded the term for this classic makeup style - let the lips make the statement and do the talking! According to this article: The 5 Biggest Makeup Trends to Look Out for in 2023 | Vogue
in Vogue magazine, in an interview with Tobi Henney, MUA, "This is a model -off-the-runway type look that clook amazing from day to night".
SWB's tip on how to achieve it: First, pick a red that jives with your skin tone. Not sure what color? I love 485 Rouge Profond by Laura Mercier - great on most skin types! Pair it with a slightly darker lip liner to really make your lips 'pop' and give a little more fullness to your pretty pout. Red can be tricky to use, but play around with it a bit and you will get the hang of it! Then, groom your brows, throw on a mascara and BAM - instant statement glam!
The 90's Thin Brow
Get out your tweezers, Friends - because this trend is on the mend! And if you're like me, you are super excited because - I plucked all those bad babies off my forehead when this became a trend, in the 90's! Yes, the rumors are true; fluffy brows are destined to make their exit in 2023, and thin is in (but just for brows, please). Less will be more, and we are here for it.... because I cannot make my brows bigger for the life of me.
SWB's tips on how to achieve: Luckily for many of us, not much there is to do, here - those brows are long gone! But for those of you who were blessed with the brow bush - you can get away with a little tweezing ( I said, a little - us seasoned pros know what too much can do) and shaping and you can thin out those furrowing friends to stay on trend!
Bare Skin
Au naturale is up and coming for 2023 beauty trends, and it is no surprise - with skincare surging over the last few years - many of us want to show off our hard work and consistency! InStyle Magazine predicted that for 2023, "skinimalism" will be the next big thing in complexion looks. How will we see this shift in our face beat ? Chanel Beauty Ambassador Tasha Reiko Brown says, "Overall, just a return to clean simple beauty that amplifies the natural face structure with softer tones. Not necessarily nudes, but just beautiful washes of color and overall, a very relaxed makeup feel."
SWB's tips to achieve: ditch the contour and foundation! after your routine cleanse, pick a radiant moisturizer and/ or SPF , and let your outer glow shine! Even combine with a little bit of a face glow product, I like this one from Maybelline - cost effective and oh so glowy! Pair with a light peachy or pink blush and voila - your face is ready for the day!
Face Embellishments
I have a core memory of my oldest kid, sticking little, tiny gemstones to my newborn baby #2, to make her 'look like a mermaid'. Well, I guess we can say that my oldest child was a trailblazer in beauty. And after all of us watching Euphoria on HBO, we all can shamelessly stick sparklies on our faces (allegedly) this year - no one will laugh, or send us to the state hospital. This year, face embellishments are THE THING - from winter formals to weddings to Coachella, facial gemstones will be everywhere. Now, I am not knocking this trend, because to each their own, but you will more than likely NOT find me following this one. I personally hate the feeling of anything weird on my face. But I will certainly applaud and appreciate the artistry people will glue to their faces.
SWB's tips to achieve: the floodgates of creative opportunity are wide open on this one, Friends. Just make sure that your skin is clean where you plan to place these adhesive appendages - they will stick better and won't fall into your Negroni, while you are prancing it up at the next festival.
Metallic /Shimmery Shadows
I have been doing makeup for a long time now, and I have always been hesitant to bring on the bling, as there was this unsung rule about women over 30 shouldn't wear shimmers and metallics on their eyes. Well, guess what? Friends, it is time to express yourselves and be as obnoxious as possible with all that glitters and shines - hooray! Metallic eyeshadows are on the up and coming list for 2023 makeup trends and I am HERE FOR IT. MUA's like Pat McGrath and Danessa Myricks are some of the extremely talented, ever-so-popular makeup queens out there on the mainstream scene, delivering gorgeous metallics with top knotch pigment. But other niche-oriented beauty brands are making the rank with some pretty amazing and sometimes more affordable competition. Check out this brand, Adept Cosmetics and their gorgeous line of duo chromes, shimmers and metallics; one of my fave brands!
SWB's tips to achieve this look: A great eyeshadow base will enhance the colors of your metallics, all the while making the makeup last a great deal longer. But with some, a little can go a long way! I really like P. Louise base products when it comes to eyeshadow bases - they are highly pigmented and high quality. But my fave tip for playing with shadows - get creative and have fun!
What do you think? Will you be trying any of these trends, this year? Will you stick with the classics, or go bold with metallics? Either way, love your skin, poaint your face and Happy New Year!
